Established in 2008, QUALIS’s first program, Skill Yourself, endeavors to economically empower female artisans by providing them—free of cost—new designs and artisan skill trainings on various artisan trades (e.g., stitching, embroidery, block printing, tie-dye, handicrafts, etc.). This program also provides artisans with information on color and fashion trends so that their products (e.g., women’s accessories and handicrafts) remain marketable. In other words, Skill Yourself’s main purposes are to “skill” the artisans and equip them with industry knowledge. All artisans are semi-skilled. Thus, it’s just a matter of improving upon their abilities to help them sell their products. Through Skill Yourself, the artisans also learn marketing and pricing skills. Artisans who want to diversify their skill-set can also learn henna tattooing and beautician techniques. Experts from various industries including fashion design and marketing volunteer to teach these programs.
